CHARLIN Renaissance

What happens to André Charlin records today in 2020?

As we mentioned on the previous page, the new team is doing its utmost to ensure that as many people as possible can benefit from these exceptional recordings.
While André Charlin was a respected sound engineer and a popular inventor with multiple patents in the 1960s, the youth of the 21st century are not necessarily familiar with his work or his recordings.
Something urgent needed to be done, and the team in place today has tackled it vigorously.

I wish them good luck.

CHARLIN Records in 2020.

The young team that took over "Disques André CHARLIN" has decided to restore "visibility" to these legendary recordings. This is a good thing, intended to ensure sustainability and longevity of CHARLIN recordings and to allow younger people who didn't experience this period to listen to these treasures and realize what we were capable of at that time!
With rare exceptions, CHARLIN recordings are just as good as the most "modern" recordings.
We still have some tapes:
- Original tapes from the 1960s are on Pyral recorded at 76 cm/s.
- Tapes from the mid-1960s and 1970s have been made by CECE for TRIO/Japan and recorded at 38 cm/s in NAB.
- TRIO tapes which are copies on SCOTCH 206 at 38 cm/s NAB.
And we still have the metal work masters for nearly the complete catalog.
These metal discs are produced from electroplating of the lacquer and used to make the pressing stampers.
This long-term project aims to ensure that these audio archives can be heard and enjoyed by as many people as possible.
To achieve this, we undertook a high-resolution 24-bit/96 kHz digitization campaign. We were very vigilant in the digitization process of the original material, using only perfectly maintained vintage analog equipment for playback.
Once in the digital domain, anything goes, but in the spirit of
To respect color, clarity and transparency of original recording, no processing nor enhancement were applied to the digitized process unless explicitly stated.
Indeed, we took the liberty of correcting the hum (it's not music) when it was too present and therefore annoying.
Even in these extreme cases, the corrections are very targeted and limited, and are clearly explained in the file presentation.
